Why Do Pets Have Vomiting and Diarrhea?

There are a number of reasons why a pet might have these issues.

At Midway Animal Hospital, one of the most common culprits is an ingestion of some sort. Pets are curious. They like to explore with their mouths. They might end up eating something they shouldn’t. For example, a dog might eat chocolate or get into cleaning supplies under the sink.

Another possible cause is an infection. Pets are capable of getting stomach bugs just like people. This can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. At Midway Animal Hospital, our job is to figure out the cause and treat it appropriately.

How Are These Symptoms Treated?

Once we have identified the cause, it is time to start the treatment process. There are two components to a treatment plan for vomiting and diarrhea. First, pets are going to be dehydrated from the vomiting and diarrhea. We will rehydrate them. If pets are able to drink by mouth, this is the preferred method. If they are unable to drink by mouth due to the vomiting, then we will use IV fluids. We will keep a close eye on their electrolytes during this treatment process.

Secondly, we’ll need to find and eliminate the root cause of these symptoms. If there is an infection present, we will treat it accordingly. This could include antiviral or antibacterial medications. If symptoms are being caused by toxic ingestion, we might have to pump the pet’s stomach. We will discuss all of this with you prior to starting the treatment.
