Puppy & Kitten Exams with our Largo Veterinarian

Puppy and Kitten sitting next to each other

If you have a new puppy or kitten or you’re considering adding one to the family, it’s important for you to bring your new pet into Midway Animal Hospital for puppy and kitten exams. Young pets with developing immune systems are more susceptible to illness and need to start their vaccinations on time to prevent health issues.

What to Expect During Your First Exam

During the first kitten and puppy exams, your veterinarian will provide a full clinical examination of your pet, from nose to tail. First, your Largo vet will weigh your puppy or kitten and take a look at the pet’s eyes, ears, coat, and teeth. The vet will also listen to your pet’s heart and may ask you questions about his or her behavior, eating habits, etc.

The first puppy and kitten exams are typically when your veterinarian will start vaccinations for your new puppy or kitten. This is also the ideal time to ask your veterinarian any questions you may have about caring for your pet or bring up any concerns about his/her health or behavior.

Puppy and Kitten Exam Vet Vaccination Schedule

After meeting with your puppy or kitten exam vet, you will be given a vaccination schedule for your new pet. Though immunization needs may vary from animal to animal, here are some basic guidelines of which vaccinations your pet will need during each stage of his/her life:

Puppy Vaccination Schedule

  • 6 Weeks – 1st Parvo vaccination; 1st deworming
  • 8 Weeks – 1st Distemper-Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Coronavirus (DHPPC) vaccination; 2nd deworming
  • 12 Weeks – 2nd DHPPC vaccination; 1st Bordatella; 3rd deworming
  • 16 Weeks – 3rd DHPPC; 2nd Bordatella; Rabies; Heartworm prevention

Kitten Vaccination Schedule

  • 8 Weeks – 1st FVRCP; 1st deworming
  • 12 Weeks – 2nd FVRCP; 1st Feline Leukemia (FeLV); 2nd deworming
  • 15 Weeks – 3rd FVRCP; 2nd FeLV; Rabies; 3rd deworming

During each of these kitten and puppy exams, your veterinarian in Largo will also provide a comprehensive physical examination to make sure that your pet’s development is progressing and there are no additional health issues.

How to Prepare for Kitten and Puppy Exams in Largo

As you prepare for your first kitten or puppy exams, you’ll start by making an appointment with a Largo veterinarian. For your first exam, you may want to schedule an appointment early in the morning before the clinic gets too busy. That way, your new pet will not have to come into contact with too many other animals while they are still susceptible to diseases.

Before you arrive, make sure that you write down any questions or concerns that you want to address with your Largo vet. This can include anything from questions about vaccinations and exams to concerns about normal behaviors and adequate nutrition. You should also bring copies of any paperwork that you received from the breeder or adoption organization so that your vet can keep this for their records.
